Cement, tile mortars and grout are all at risk of damage from cracking and moisture. An addition of styrene-butadiene latex improves flexibility, which helps resist crack formation, but when water is present carboxylated styrene-butadiene latexes like Tylac® are the preferred choice. These work by using a precise addition of carboxylic acid during polymerization to reduce the quantity of surfactant needed and promote polymer cross-linking. Incorporating just a small proportion in a cement or cementitious mix increases water resistance, hardness and adhesion.

When UV resistance is also needed, which is often the case in outdoor applications, turn to the Rovene® family of acrylics. These resist the premature aging that can affect non-acrylic polymers, and also hold up well top attack by oils and solvents, ensuring an as-new appearance is maintained for years.
